Waltti WebstoreRedesign
Leading designer of the Waltti Web Store UX research and webservice redesign — a project to improve usability and align the service's visual identity across several major Finnish cities.
Overview
Waltti is a widely-used public transport website serving several major cities in Finland, including Oulu, Lappeenranta, and Mikkeli. The website features a web service known as the Waltti Webstore, allowing consumers to reload their travel cards or purchase city bike and public transport passes.
In 2018, Waltti embarked on a project to redesign the webstore, aiming to enhance its usability and align its visual appearance with the updated brand identity. I took on the role of lead UX/UI designer for this project, leading a small team of two other UX/UI designers.
Process
The process began with stakeholder interviews with representatives of Oulu City, the service's customer care personnel, and technical experts from Waltti. We evaluated the current state of the service, mapped existing key user paths, identified pain points, and formed a suggestion for improved user flows.
We facilitated co-design workshops to gather insights from key client stakeholders, create a common understanding of the most important user paths and their core problems, and to co-design the new user flows of the service. Accessibility was evaluated based on WCAG 2.1 guidelines in the form of a detailed report.
Outcome
The whole web service was redesigned based on UX research and co-design workshops, with renewed visuals matching Waltti's new graphic identity. The design process followed typical UX/UI phases and documentation — site map, wireframes, layouts, and clickable prototypes.
The project also resulted in a compact design system documentation that Waltti can use across their digital services to unify the user experience.
